Critical thinking reflection

Module learning At the start of the effective communication module, I have aimed to boost my confidence in talking out loud and to learn as much as I could in this module by receiving constructive feedbacks. While this module is coming to an end, I feel that I have gained some confidence in talking out loud. In this module, I have been taught of several useful skills. One of the skills which I find it to be useful would be the 7Cs of communication. The 7Cs are clear, concise, concrete, correct, coherent, complete, and courteous. Personally, I feel that these points could be applied at anywhere, be it in school or outside. This module has given me to communicate with other people. From there, I got to know them better and able to befriend with them. I am glad that I can make friends here. During the discussion session in this module, it has allowed me to do some critical thinking. The introduction of giving and receiving feedbacks has allowed opportunities of improving in the class. Environmental Impacts of Natural Gas (2014). The Union of Concerned Scientists.  https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/timeline/environment. In the article, “Environmental Impacts of Natural Gas”, the author from Union of Concerned Scientist has addressed the environmental impacts from combustion of natural gas. The burning of natural gas has caused several environmental issues such as air pollution and the effects on land use and wildlife. The author mentioned the burning of natural gas has produced nitrogen oxides which are harmful pollutants. The pollutants have caused health issues such as “asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer, and heart disease” to many of the people in America. Exposure to these harmful pollutants can lead to respiratory health conditions. On the land use and wildlife aspect, the author mentioned that the building of the power plant for burning of natural gas has harmed the ecosystem and affected wildlife habitats. The construction process has allowed harmful po

Reader's response on "What we do and don’t know about the links between air pollution and coronavirus" (Final)

In the article "What we do and don’t know about the links between air pollution and coronavirus" written by Alistair Lewis, he stated on his view of how air pollution is link with coronavirus. Air pollution has increased the rate of "strokes, heart disease, respiratory illness and more" which has led to high mortality rate. Therefore, it is clear that air pollution and coronavirus are interlink. However, there are other factors as well contributing to corona virus. In highly developed places such as New York City and London where it has high influx of people due to its "extensive global travel connections", it increases the chances of "person-to-person contagion rates”. In urban areas, people also tend to take mass transport system. This means that higher chances of infectious rate. While I agree that air pollution plays a part in affecting coronavirus, Lewis did not clearly mention on the other contributing factors. One of the factors which Lewis h

Formal letter revised (Descriptive reflection)

Dear Professor Brad, The purpose of me writing this formal letter to you is about an introduction about myself and the expectations I have for in this communication module. My name is Tan Jin Han, and I  graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a diploma in mechanical engineering. Currently, I am studying Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (SIE) of building services in Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). Due to one of the modules which I had studied in my polytechnic, I was amazed of how we are able to make use of resources such as the solar panels to generate electricity. Also, I had learned how a simple windmill is able to convert the energy from the wind to produce electrical energy. Subsequently, electricity is being provided to the users which is referring to us. That is why I have chosen to take up this course in SIT. In terms of communication, my strength would be being open-minded. I would always try my best to understand from his or her point of view. Through analyz

The importance of communication skills for Engineers

“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important). It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.” Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011) I believe for each different field, they have their own expertise. It is truly difficult to explain the concepts of engineering to someone whom has no or little engineering backgrounds. It takes awhile for them to digest it. Vice versa, we as engineers might not understand terms such as "liquidity" in accounting.
